A Porcupine, Committees, And Ditsy Sermons

Image
Let’s be honest, dragging a cheese grater over one's thigh sounds almost appealing compared to enduring those mind-numbing situations foisted upon us by people eagerly awaiting their next chance to be offended. I wish I could be abducted by space aliens before tomorrow's staff meeting. I’d prefer a chaotic audit by rabid raccoons over sitting through yet another speech that starts with, “As we reimagine the paradigm moving forward…”. I'd rather navigate rush-hour traffic using only a treasure map than sit through another committee meeting about creating a committee. I'd rather read the terms and conditions for every app on my phone than hear another sermon that mistakes partisan talking points for divine revelation. I'd rather be stranded at sea with a karaoke machine stuck on The Chipmunk Song than endure another lecture where every disagreement is treated as a full-blown crisis. I'd rather watch Joanie Loves Chachi episodes while folding fitted sheets than a...

A Safe Religion or The Way of the Cross?

Image
The danger of “safe religion” is that it tempts Christians to domesticate the Gospel—to reduce it to comfort, moral uplift, or cultural belonging rather than the radical, self‑giving love revealed in the Cross of Christ. Safe religion keeps faith within the boundaries of convenience. It avoids sacrifice, resists conversion, and prefers a God who affirms rather than transforms. Yet the Gospel is anything but safe. It is the announcement that God has entered human history, taken on suffering, and conquered death through love that bleeds. Gilbert K. Chesterton | The Christian ideal has not been tried and found wanting; it has been found difficult and left untried. "Safe space" or life of grace? At its core, safe religion is a refusal to risk. It seeks spiritual life without vulnerability, discipleship without obedience, and mission without witness. It is content with comfort rather than holiness. When faith becomes a private hobby or a cultural accessory, it loses its evangelica...

THE RUPERT OCCASIONAL DIGEST June Something Or Other

Religion, Society, and Culture Politics. Our American cousins and the Omar. Nine Lives Ilhan continues to hang on. One moment, her net worth was $30 million; the next, it dropped to under a million. Which is it? A reasonable question even her former allies are now asking. How does a sitting congresswoman with an annual salary of $174,000 per year manage to increase her net worth into the tens of millions of dollars in such a short period of time ? Speaking engagements? Investments? Did she seek financial advice from Nancy Pelosi? Hunter Biden? Former President Joe Biden? Was her previous estimate conflated with the income of her husband? Her troubles are piling up just as quickly as her wealth seems to be evaporating. Whether she is innocent or not, pray that justice may be served for the good of all souls. www.youtube.com/watch?v=HD15LXg5WLQ&t=9s  Omar named in fraud scandal x.com/FoxNews/status/2057124901798936972  Fraud scandal https://rumble.com/v6i2771-watch-ilha...

Religion, Society, and Culture Media. Stephen Colbert leaves his late night throne. Having had his feet held to the fire he helped to create, and subject to a loss of market share (declining viewership) indicative of a lack of actual comedy, Colbert leaves late night entertainment after more than 20 years in the spotlight. Some claim, he among them, that he is the victim of political interference . No doubt, he provided some untimely and unseemly pokes that got him the wrong kind of attention, at least to his way of thinking. If ya can't take the heat... . Perhaps he will use the off-air time to work on becoming less cafeteria and more Catholic. Religion. As the SSPX vs Holy See battle continues, those of us on the sidelines can and should pray, and avoid pouring gasoline on an already heated exchange. The Society has many beautiful and truly excellent attributes - love for the sacred liturgy, a robust devotional life, and authentic disciplined spirituality. However, obedience to...

POPE LEO XIV Magnifica Humanitas

Even in the darkest nights, the Lord raises up men and women who refuse to give up, who persevere in doing good, who protect the vulnerable and open pathways to reconciliation. The memory of the saints, righteous people and the oft-forgotten peacemakers, show us that grace does not magically eliminate conflict, but instead it inspires active resistance to evil and an astonishing creativity in doing good” (paragraph 211).

WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

I doubt not then but innocence shall make false accusation blush, and tyranny tremble at patience.

WORDS TO THE WHYS

You cannot subsidize irresponsibility and expect people to become more responsible. Thomas Sowell

EPICTETUS

If anyone tells you that a certain person speaks ill of you, do not make excuses about what is said of you but answer, "He was ignorant of my other faults, else he would not have mentioned these alone."
