Sobering Words

Image
Courtroom artist Ronald Searle (Eichmann) | screenshot At the completion of the Eichmann trial , NBC's Frank McGee recorded a message from inside the Jerusalem courtroom, the scene of the trial. His message should remind any and all in these uncertain times that a loss of reason can infect anyone and start someone down the road to commit unimaginable atrocities. In 1961, McGee said : For each of us who has ever felt that God created us better than any other human being has stood on the threshold where Eichmann once stood. And each of us who has allowed the shape of another person's nose or the color of their skin or the manner in which they worship their God, to poison our feelings towards them, have known the loss of reason that led Eichmann to his madness. For this was how it all began with those who did these things. Unchallenged, prejudice rots into violence and, when those possessed by prejudice are manipulated by a demagogue into serving blindly, metastasizes into genocid

Biden and Harris sittin' in a tree... .

... d-i-s-s-i-n-g. That's all they do. That's all they can do - diss and dismiss. Let's get political for a moment. Biden and Harris spend the majority of their media time attempting to create division and chaos. If they manage to establish an expectation and acceptance of division or polarization in the minds of citizens, and chaos spreads, people will become desperate for a solution, for relief from that division and chaos. In Biden's case, the division he creates is due to the division in his person, between his claim of being a "devout Catholic" while acting like a heathen. A Litany Bishop Stika has been a vocal advocate for the right to life and has repeatedly called out the Democrat Party for its anti-life platform. In early 2019, the bishop slammed Democrats as “the party of infanticide” for their blocking of anti-infanticide legislation in the Senate. Stika tweeted out congratulations to President Donald Trump “for his words regarding the slaughter o

Attribution at The Philadelphia Inquirer: remnants of the disassemble altar rail at St. Michael's From the Philadelphia Inquirer : For the last 12 years, Donna Panno, who leads the singing for Sunday Mass at St. Michael Roman Catholic Church in North Philadelphia, sat in the first pew. [...] But while St. Michael was closed because of the pandemic between March and early June, that pew, along with many others, was ripped from the historic church’s hardwood floors, the altar rails removed. The center-aisle marble floor — down which members and their parents before them had marched to be married — as well as the hardwood floors beneath the remaining pews were covered in bright red carpeting. Covering over hardwood? marble floors covered with carpet? Have the wreckovators no sense of acoustic? Rhetorical question, granted. Was the choir ever consulted? Probably not, given that the organist was handed a pink slip in the days leading up to the wreckovation. Little consultation was done,

"We require both humility and boldness if we want to do theology well."

Mystery defies both containment and concision. A few etymological types might penetrate further into the correlative conjunction and the juxtaposition. - - - The Church is blessed with many outstanding thinkers, more in the past and fewer in the present, perhaps, but blessed nonetheless. One contemporary thought-crafter that readers might look at is Douglas Farrow, PhD, [...] professor of theology and Christian thought at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. A noted lecturer and a prolific essayist, he is the author of several books, including  Ascension and Ecclesia ,  Ascension Theology ,  Nation of Bastards: Essays on the End of Marriage , and  Desiring a Better Country: Forays in Political Theology . His 2018 book  Theological Negotiations: Proposals in Soteriology and Anthropology  (Baker Academic) has been  praised by Scott Hahn as “uncompromisingly biblical, catholic, and ecumenical”  and Tracey Rowland states that “Farrow’s style is engaging; the essays could be appreciated f

That's Odd

The image above is the  pulpit (ca.1750) in a parish church in Dobroszów, Poland. How's that for an appropriate location from which to preach on Jonah 1:17 (see below) or perhaps Genesis 1:21? Tall priests need not apply. Staying with an ocean theme, there's the following pulpit located in the Imperial Abbey of Irsee. A great place from which to invite people to get on board the Barque of Peter. That is one serious pulpit! Most modern ambos are tame by comparison. Turning from the unique and delightfully unusual to the highly unfortunate and disturbing, who can forget the following oddity (2020)? In conclusion, the Left Coast favourite example of the painfully odd... not pulpits but puppets . If you'll excuse me, I have to scratch out my eyes for looking at that scene from a "Catholic" liturgy led by a certain SJW  RC Bishop-emeritus , a recipient of the  Order of the (Anglican) Diocese of British Columbia  for being, to their way of thinking, a successful SJW.

Once again, on 11AUG and 12AUG, Mr. Bruise's septic field overfloweth. Gossip cannot be allowed to roam freely the internet. Unchallenged, it does irreparable harm to those who are targeted by it and to those who participate in it. In contrast to cruelties enacted by a frequent offender, one of his targets counsels  us to (11AUG) Pray for those who seek your ruin. Pray for yourself and thank God for all of your humiliations. Pray for those who suffer unjustly. Above all, seek to build up the kingdom rather than tear it down. Those words are of particular encouragement to this blogger. One might add to the author's counsel - go the extra mile! Granted, if one holds to the belief that the goal in life is merely self preservation, i.e., "me-first" is the be all and end all of it, it doesn't make much sense to give extra to those who engage in vile gossip and who seek to empower themselves at our expense. But - follow the Lord's teaching and example! Deny thyself,

Saint John Henry Newman, Doctor of the Church.

Image
Catholic Herald Soup Should Saint John Henry Newman be declared a Doctor of the Church? Some very high-up types are inclined to think so! To those, we could certainly add a host of passionate faithful lay men and women who think him worthy. Delivered at times with great emotion by His Eminence Cardinal Ouellet in 2019 close to the canonization of John Henry Cardinal Newman, Cardinal Ouellet's speech should provide plenty of material to convince Rome that Newman should be declared a Doctor of the Church, and soon!  This appeal is not a demand; it is additional fuel for conversation. No one should attempt to force a decision that properly belongs to the Church's competent authority. That said, it is certainly permissible and likely that people are praying for Newman to be declared a Doctor of the Church. Let's keep the conversation and prayers going, shall we? At the risk of distracting readers from engaging Cardinal Ouellet's homage, a preamble is next set forth to focu
