Lessons From Canada (For Our American Brethren)

Dear American Cousins,

Let's get right to the point, shall we? Canada is a mess. Nine years of the current Liberal coalition government's failed policies stands as a cautionary tale for you and your nation.

The Canadian mess offers a cautionary tale to guide you away from making the same mistakes we have made as a nation.

Trudeau's Scandals

Canada's economy is in ruins. Ideology-driven public grade schools and colleges have contributed to an epidemic of mental illness among young adults. Our health system has crashed. Most appointments with a personal physician - if one is fortunate to have a doctor - are by phone that last 15 minutes on average. Surgery wait times are often beyond ridiculous. Governments through local services are pushing MAID - medical assistance in dying (euthanasia) - to alleviate the "burden" on the healthcare system (In 2022, there were 13,241 MAID provisions in Canada, bringing the total number of medically assisted deaths in Canada since 2016 to 44,958. In 2022, the total number of MAID provisions increased by 31.2% (2022 over 2021) compared to 32.6% (2021 over 2020)). Deficit spending is practically off the charts. The national debt is ballooning out of control. Canada's credit rating has been downgraded. Inflation is crushing. Food and lodging costs have doubled. Canada has plenty of petroleum and natural gas and yet fuel and heating costs are barely manageable, if that. Societal violence is steadily increasing. National security is perforated by foreign interference. Democratic processes and institutions have been compromised. Several national bodies are engaged in assessing the threat.

Bleak, isn't it?

Ottawa, ON – After eight years of Justin Trudeau, Canadians are living through a housing hell. The cost of rent and a downpayment has doubled. Before Trudeau, it used to take 25 years to pay off a mortgage, now it takes 25 years just to save up for a downpayment.

Just before Trudeau delivered yet another housing photo-op today, RBC published their Housing Affordability Report, showing that a household earning a median pre-tax income needed to spend 63.5% of it to cover the costs of owning a typical average home at market price. That’s up from 61.8% in the third quarter. In 2015, the same measure was 39.3%.

In Halifax, where Trudeau delivered this announcement, RBC declared that ownership costs had reached a “record high”, jumping to 45.3% of median pre-tax household income needed to cover home ownership costs, far exceeding the long-run average of 31.9%. No wonder that there are now 30 homeless encampments across the Halifax region.

Despite Trudeau’s endless announcements, Rentals.Ca reported that the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in Halifax is up 10.1% since last year, and the average rent for a two-bedroom unit is now $2,336. Meanwhile, the composite price of a home in the Halifax-Dartmouth region reached $524,500 – which is up 103% since Trudeau was first elected in 2015. Nobody can afford this.

The Liberals have no solutions to the crisis they created. Under Trudeau, Canada is building fewer homes than we did in the 1970s when Canada had half the population, yet the Liberals continue to double down on their failed policies by creating a $4 billion photo-op fund. But Canadians can’t live in photo-ops.

Trudeau's fear and intimidation tactics

If you elect VP Harris and Walz, who promote the same or similar policies as the coalition government consisting of the Liberal Party and the New Democratic Party of Canada, you are in for a societal collapse of epic proportions, a tragedy that will take subsequent governments decades to reverse. Minnesota burning will turn into a wildfire across the USA. An exaggeration? Hyperbole? John Zmirak captures the mounting problems and policy concerns in an article that alerts readers to a likely trajectory.

Hope

Dear cousins, you have a state that is well managed and thriving that can serve as an example of the political direction that the rest of the USA should take. Florida, governed by Ron DeSantis, is an oasis of common sense policies, policies that have transformed Florida into a highly desirable place to do business, to work, to raise families, and to retire. Floridian policies are a relief for parents battling for the natural right to raise their children free from dangerous ideologies that threaten the health and well being of young people.

Floridians are making real the potential seen by the American Founding Fathers.

Florida remains one of the world's strongest economies, with an annual GDP of nearly $1.3 trillion. And Florida continues to lead the nation in new business formations, with more than 3 million formed since 2019 and over 266,000 formed already in 2024.

People from other states are flocking to Florida in search of what could be offered in their own states but is denied to people (who want a normal life of peace, security and economic stability) by politicians who are true to their liberal leanings. That is, many liberal or progressive politicians' actions are saturated with unworkable ideas - socialist ideas! - that have been tried and rejected because they destroy people's lives. People's lives are being destroyed. Those same politicians will stop at nothing, not even when confronted with a burgeoning list of millions of economic casualties and hundreds of thousands of medical casualties, to bend people to their twisted vision of a society.

Minnesota has become a war zone under Walz's administration. His policies have put Minnesota in first place in the race to destroy innocent human life at any point from conception up to and including birth. His gleeful response to signing into law said policies is disturbing, to say the least. Walz's policies tend to confirm the understanding that depraved laws issue from depraved minds.

Vice President Harris is a fraud who has done little of anything to merit praise or support. Her speeches are filled with vapid slogans (à la The Communist Manifesto) that are echoes of a society-killing Bolshevism. Her rhetoric is soaked with debilitating Marxist dogma that inevitably leads to violent struggle between citizens of diverse backgrounds. When people are pitted against one another, and chaos ensues, communities are reduced to survival mode, unable to rise out their misery to expend additional energy to counter the societal dissonance created by socialism-minded politicians.

Peekaboo, I see you!

The task is to identify those who make promises they will not keep (and reject them), and to recognize those who are true to their word (and vote for them). For all of Harris' awareness of societal hardships and droning about how she is the candidate for the common person, she and Biden have been in power for three-and-a-half years and have done nothing to reverse the problems that they have created. Things have only gotten worse under the Biden-Harris administration. There is little Harris can do, given her record and ideological orientation, to convince others that a Harris-Walz government would be any different than a Biden-Harris government.

Reporters are not asking - because they are not demanding the opportunity to ask - the hard questions that ought to be posed to a presidential candidate. On the rare occasion when Harris is confronted with her lack of performance, she attempts to deflect attention by rambling on about disparate topics in a way that even independent commentators charitably describe as amounting to a mere word salad.

Videos on social media capture how Harris trades on the popularity of others. Her rallies are piggybacked on to concerts that draw a crowd that, in most cases, dissipates after the free show. Her ability to network has served her well. She has piggybacked her career onto the careers of others for her own benefit. She possesses little or no moral compass; she uses people to acquire power for herself, which often compounds injustices.

Whether politicians like Harris and Walz realize it or not - are willingly complicit or perhaps mere stooges - they are doing what the hard left has tried to do elsewhere. They are doing the work of frontline troops marching to the beat of a diabolical drummer.

And so, dear cousins, pray, fast, and work hard for the renewal of your society.

Many (most?) in Canada are awake to the disaster that is our current government. There is potential for relief on the horizon. His political and media savvy is likely known among conservative Americans. Pierre Poilievre (English speakers typically say Poly-ev: click HERE for Pierre Poilievre sharing how to pronounce his name) offers common sense policies for successfully running a country, policies guided by beliefs that include:

  • A belief in a balance between fiscal responsibility, compassionate social policy that empowers the less fortunate by promotion of self-reliance and equality of opportunity, and the rights and responsibilities of individuals, families and free associations. The goal of building a national coalition of people who share these beliefs and who reflect the regional, cultural and socio-economic diversity of Canada. The goal of developing this coalition, embracing our differences and respecting our traditions, yet honouring a concept of Canada as the greater sum of strong parts.
  • A belief in the value and dignity of all human life.
  • A belief in the equality of all Canadians.
  • A belief in the freedom of the individual, including freedom of speech, worship,  assembly and association.
  • A belief in the federal system of government as the best expression of the diversity of our country, and in the desirability of strong provincial and territorial governments, where all must be treated so that the constitutional boundaries of governance between the federal and provincial authorities are respected for mutual and national benefits.
  • A belief that the best guarantors of the prosperity and well-being of the People of Canada are: the freedom of individual Canadians to pursue their enlightened and legitimate self-interest within a free competitive economy; the freedom of individual Canadians to enjoy the fruits of their labour to the greatest possible extent; the right to own property.
  • A belief that a responsible government must be fiscally prudent and should be limited to  those responsibilities which cannot be discharged reasonably by the individual or others.
  • A belief that it is the responsibility of individuals to provide for themselves, their families  and their dependents, while recognizing that government must respond to those who require assistance and compassion.
  • A belief that the purpose of Canada as a nation state and its government, guided by reflective and prudent leadership, is to create a climate wherein individual initiative is rewarded, excellence is pursued, security and privacy of the individual is provided and prosperity is guaranteed by  a free competitive market economy.
  • A belief that Canada should continue its strong heritage of national defence, supporting a well-armed military, honouring those who serve, and promoting our history and traditions.
  • A belief that the quality of the environment is a vital part of our heritage to be protected by each generation for the next.
  • A belief that good and responsible government is attentive to the people it represents and consists of members who at all times conduct themselves in an ethical manner and display integrity, honesty and concern for the best interest of all.
  • A belief that all Canadians should have reasonable access to quality healthcare regardless of their ability to pay.
  • A belief that the greatest potential for achieving social and economic objectives is under a global trading regime that is free and fair.

If you need further reminders about the consequences of electing politicians from the dodgy left side of the spectrum, you only need to pay attention to current events in the land of our common parent, which is currently governed by Liberal Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Free speech in Britain is practically dead. The British police commissioner has even threatened to prosecute foreign commentators who publish on social media anything that threatens the government's agenda. Prime Minister Starmer's coarse actions are no different than Prime Minister Trudeau's use of the revamped War Measures Act to curb protests. Trudeau's actions - which included incarceration, seizing property and freezing bank accounts - have since been declared illegal.

The Court concluded that: The federal government’s decision to declare a public order emergency under the Emergencies Act in early 2022, as well as the associated regulations that it enacted, were unreasonable and were not justified on the facts or the law. The regulations violated the Charter right to freedom of expression and the right to be secure against unreasonable search or seizure.

That the mainstream media in Canada colluded with the Government to portray legitimate resistance to unjust governmental policies as a threat to democracy confirms the challenge people of goodwill face. Canadians have historically favoured peace, order and good government. The Liberal coalition has inverted these values and installed conformity to their attempts at social engineering according to progressive ideology as the idol of the land.

Let us remember that the challenges we face - political, social, cultural, environmental (yes... what we believe affects how we treat the natural world created by God), and educational - are spiritual battles. Unredeemed man enamoured in a quest for power more often that not contributes to the problems between peoples and their surroundings because he lacks a moral formation, a formation founded upon the Holy Gospel, that points his heart and mind toward a virtuous use of power. Man's internal disposition, creative or chaotic, manifests externally. The immoral man is a poor steward of the gifts entrusted to him. The virtuous person is an effective steward.

So then, who will be the better steward of the power entrusted to that politician by citizens?

Let us, together, pray for our countries. Let us ask God for mercy and the strength to turn our communities away from evil, and to return our respective societies to wholesome and lifegiving principles in education, economics, and culture.

Almighty God, Eternal Father, vouchsafe to watch over us, our nations, and our families. Do battle with the forces of darkness and death. Free us from the malice and control of wicked men who seek power for power's sake. Send forth Thy Spirit to strengthen the angels of our countries and our guardian angels. Grant us wisdom and the fortitude to confront obstacles to truth and goodness. Help us to work for the conversion of souls by granting us the grace to be faithful witnesses to the Holy Gospel. This we/I pray in the Name of Jesus Christ, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of the Americas: intercede for us.
Mary Immaculate, patroness of the United States: pray for us.
Saint Joseph, patron of Canada: pray for us.
