So who's a Catholic to believe?

Awroo?

One voice, a Vatican official, in a letter replying to his fellow Englishman, tells us that the older Mass was abrogated. Another voice, a papal voice, says 'no', the older Mass was never abrogated.

The Vatican’s liturgy chief (Archbishop Arthur Roche) has said that the Traditional Latin Mass was “abrogated by Pope Saint Paul VI.” Archbishop Arthur Roche made the comment in a letter dated Aug. 4 to the English Cardinal Vincent Nichols. - CNA/Gloria.tv

As for the use of the 1962 Missal as a Forma extraordinaria of the liturgy of the Mass, I would like to draw attention to the fact that this Missal was never juridically abrogated and, consequently, in principle, was always permitted. - Pope Benedict XVI, Summorum Pontificum (SP)

Divine Worship, the Mass of the Ordinariate, resolves most if not all the tensions that people on opposing sides of the liturgical debate are experiencing. Divine Worship is a middle way that excels at the actual goals of the Second Vatican Council. The Council Fathers would probably marvel at the genius of Divine Worship, a liturgy that overcomes the dichotomy of old or new, and offers our separated brethren - especially Anglicans and Methodists - a way home while preserving the best elements of the Anglican Patrimony, elements which are treasures to be shared with the wider Church.

Back to the matter of archbishop-says-pope-says. It seems that Archbishop Roche may want to rethink and retract his claim concerning the abrogation of the 1570/1962 Missal, given for example that even the

Sarum Use (11th Century) remains a permitted use for Roman Catholics, as Pope Pius V permitted the continuation of uses more than two hundred years old under the Apostolic Constitution Quo primum.

Quo Primum, which reads

This new rite (1570 Mass) alone is to be used unless approval of the practice of saying Mass differently was given at the very time of the institution and confirmation of the church by Apostolic See at least 200 years ago, or unless there has prevailed a custom of a similar kind which has been continuously followed for a period of not less than 200 years, in which most cases We in no wise rescind their above-mentioned prerogative or custom. However, if this Missal, which we have seen fit to publish, be more agreeable to these latter, We grant them permission to celebrate Mass according to its rite, provided they have the consent of their bishop or prelate or of their whole Chapter, everything else to the contrary notwithstanding.

All other of the churches referred to above, however, are hereby denied the use of other missals, which are to be discontinued entirely and absolutely; whereas, by this present Constitution, which will be valid henceforth, now, and forever, We order and enjoin that nothing must be added to Our recently published Missal, nothing omitted from it, nor anything whatsoever be changed within it under the penalty of Our displeasure.

Valid henceforth, now and forever,... .

To those who assert that the Second Vatican Council (or Pope Saint Paul or Pope Francis) abolished the older Mass, the obvious question remains. Where is the proof for such a declaration? For those who pretend that the Second Vatican Council established a new and different church (from the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church), again, where is the proof for such a position?

ST AUGUSTINE

The truth is like a lion; you don’t have to defend it. Let it loose; it will defend itself.

POPE LEO XIV

The right to freedom of expression, freedom of conscience, religious freedom, and even the right to life are being restricted in the name of other so-called new rights, with the result that the very framework of human rights is losing its vitality and creating space for force and oppression. This occurs when each right becomes self-referential, and especially when it becomes disconnected from reality, nature, and truth.

BISHOP BARRON | Loving One's Enemy

About twenty-five years ago, Joseph Cardinal Bernardin of Chicago was accused by a young man named Steven Cook of sexual misconduct. In a speech given at Mundelein Seminary shortly thereafter, the cardinal said that he was devastated by this charge, indeed so demoralized and traumatized that he had taken to praying, spread-eagle on the ground in his chapel, that the Lord might deliver him from the shame and hurt that he felt. After two agonizing months, Cook withdrew the charge, admitting that it was based on a false memory. Who would have blamed Cardinal Bernardin if he had said, “Good riddance!” and never had a thing further to do with Steven Cook? But the cardinal didn’t do that. Instead, he travelled to see the young man, brought him the gift of a Bible, anointed him (Cook was dying of AIDS), and offered his forgiveness. That’s what loving, and not just tolerating, one’s enemy looks like.
