Controversial Cardinal Danneels Dies

Cardinal Danneels has died. Many tradition-minded Catholics need little or no reminder of his influence and at times questionable witness to the Gospel.

In a 2015 authorized biography of the cardinal, Danneels was listed as being part of a group of cardinals who coordinated efforts ahead of the conclave that elected Pope Francis. - CNA

Accused of participating in a movement to elect then Cardinal Bergoglio, now Pope Francis, a shameful politicization of the Petrine Ministry (and the election process) if the accusations are true, Cardinal Danneels' behaviour appeared to resemble that of secular leaders more than a member of the hierarchy of the Catholic Church, particularly with regards to social issues. At times, his participation in the public life of his native country appeared to follow a more live-and-let-live approach than a clear, confident and charitable witness calling people to embrace the liberating message of the Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ.

As leader of the Church in Belgium, the cardinal was an established figure in national life, keeping close company with politicians and members of the royal family. He was sometimes criticized for his apparent willingness to embrace secular-liberal politics(.) - CNA

As Europe continues to revert to its brutal pagan past, one has to ask how one such as Cardinal Danneels contributed to the civilization of Europe when his witness was halting at best, and at worst a repetition of his secular brethren's tragic misunderstanding about the human condition and attempts to facilitate an ideology that reduces the human person to mere utility.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord: and let light perpetual shine upon him. May God grant Cardinal Danneels a swift and merciful judgement. May he rest in peace.
