A whale of a time?

Well, what do you know? The Ordinary Form of the Mass is under attack once more.

XANTEN, Germany — Serious concern has emerged after a life-size sculpture of a dead humpback whale was placed inside Xanten Cathedral, one of the country’s historic Catholic churches.

The artwork, known as the Cast Whale Project and created by Gil Shachar, now lies prominently in the nave of the cathedral. Church officials say it is meant to symbolize the “vulnerability of creation” during Lent.

However, many faithful Catholics view the installation as deeply inappropriate. Critics argue that placing the image of a dead animal inside a consecrated church undermines the sacred character of the sanctuary and shifts the focus away from Christ and the central truths of the faith.

This controversial display has reignited debate about the use of Catholic churches for modern artistic and symbolic projects, raising questions about reverence, tradition, and the preservation of sacred space.

Instead of giving in to despair when faced with absurdities, crimes, indifference, and ignorance toward the Mass, we should remember—and remind others—that God is in control, and that we will all have to answer to our Creator for our actions. We must remember not to take on the role that belongs to God alone, who sees everything and hears the cries of His people and offers grace to help us all turn to Him. The Lord will address those who misuse the Mass and the sacred Liturgy that Jesus Himself has given us, where He is truly present—Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity.

During Lent, we’re reminded that evil is defeated through relying on God’s grace. It’s a season of grace during which we increase our fasting and prayers, to renew our openness to God, and for letting our voices be instruments for God to speak. While working out our salvation with fear and trembling, we are also called to reach out to those most in need of His mercy and offer them the love of Christ.
