X Catholic Or Ex-Catholic?

Are you an 'X Catholic' or an 'Ex-Catholic', or perhaps both?

X Catholic: a Catholic who inhabits X, formerly Twitter, and uses the platform to disseminate whatever it is s/he may choose that peaks the Catholic interest. The X Catholic may be Trad and Glad or Rad and Bad, which is to say faithful or heterodox.

X is well known for offering a space for sharing conversion stories and asking questions for those searching for meaning and authenticity. It helps people connect and discover communities where their questions are answered through the Gospel of Jesus Christ, leading to healing and salvation. Brief video testimonies uploaded by converts speak volumes and help create a meaningful familiarity with a person's story. There are sites that offer group recitation of the Holy Rosary. Catholic "influencers" of the orthodox kind offer valuable insights. Live episodes of Catholics Answers and other reliable sites are linked to at X. And, of course, not just X. There are other social media sites that are being used for spiritually (and morally) upright purposes.

Ex-Catholic: as the label implies, one who has distanced her/himself from the Church or what s/he imagines to be the Church. The ex-Catholic may be willfully rebellious or may have fallen into a circle of influence that gradually made him or her more opaque to grace. Someone may have been abused and become rightly angry, and disillusioned. Point of fact: if someone is baptized s/he is Catholic, and we do not abandon a wounded sibling. He or she may not want to engage with the Church, but we can still pray for someone in need of God's mercy. We can make ourselves available to listen and be present to someone's story and help them find peace in prayer and the Holy Eucharist. We can pray with someone, accompany them, and invite them to trust in God's care.

Social media can be sources of intense distraction. Need it be said that there is a lot of very unhealthy behaviour flying through the various platforms? Those who lack discretion, or who are at a weak point in their lives, should avoid feeding (themselves to) the trolls, scammers, attention hounds and those trafficking in destructive behaviour, i.e., those who feed on bringing down decent people into calumny, deceit, and personal destruction.

Keep innocency, and take heed unto the thing that is right : for that shall bring a man peace at the last.

POPE LEO XIV

The right to freedom of expression, freedom of conscience, religious freedom, and even the right to life are being restricted in the name of other so-called new rights, with the result that the very framework of human rights is losing its vitality and creating space for force and oppression. This occurs when each right becomes self-referential, and especially when it becomes disconnected from reality, nature, and truth.

ST AUGUSTINE

The truth is like a lion; you don’t have to defend it. Let it loose; it will defend itself.

SAINT PHILIP NERI

The greatness of our love of God must be tested by the desire we have of suffering for His love.

MARCUS AURELIUS

There is but one thing of real value - to cultivate truth and justice, and to live without anger in the midst of lying and unjust men.

MARK TWAIN

If you tell the truth, you don't have to remember anything.

ARTHUR SCHOPENHAUER

All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.
